How long does it take to become a foster parent in the UK?

When they temporarily cannot remain with their birth parents, children and young people of different ages and backgrounds enter foster care. It might be due to a family illness, a family dissolution, issues at home, or a circumstance where their welfare is in danger. Many people will have had physical, emotional, or sexual abuse and neglect.

Once you have decided to become a foster parent or want to learn more about fostering, the first step is to fill out our online form and provide us with your information. We will be there for you along every step of your road to being a foster carer.

How to become a foster parent?

The procedure begins when you submit an application to become a foster parent and ends when the fostering agency makes a decision. Up to 8 months may be needed to finish the procedure.

You can submit an application to your neighbourhood council or a private fostering agency to become a foster parent. You can only register with one fostering agency.

You are required to attend a fostering education course by the council or agency.

You must pass an enhanced with barred lists Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, along with the checks of all adults who live with you.

A social worker evaluates you and your household to determine whether you are qualified to care for a child.

You specify any preferences you may have for the kids you'll be watching, such as age or gender. A foster child is not eligible for a trial period and cannot be selected from a group of children.

The foster care agency evaluates your application. You must appear before their panel, which will provide a recommendation.

Your application is reviewed and decided upon by the fostering service.
