Fiber Channel Fundamentals

Fibre Channel is an enhanced-speed networking technology primarily used for data transmission. It sends data between two centres, switches, servers, and storage: the Fibre Channel Protocol layers (FCP) transport information units and SCSI commands. Fibre Channel offers lossless ordered raw block data and Point-to-Point, Switched Fabric, and Arbitrated Loop interfaces. Fibre channels can be used with various cables, not only optical fibre. Fibre Channel can be used with coaxial cable and telephone twisted-pair wires, although if copper is used, the distance shouldn't be longer than 100 feet. A company's enterprise data storage network can be up to 6 miles long if it uses optical fibre.

It was designed to replace the High-Performance Parallel Interface and the Small Computer System Interface (HIPPI). Because of the flaws in these topologies, Fibre Channel was created.
